Electronic waste (e-Waste) is waste or refuse that originates from electronic devices. Examples include mobile phones, computers, televisions, washing machines, and so on. Did you know? Electronic waste contains hazardous and toxic substances, such as heavy metals, PVC, PCBs, and others, which can harm human health and the environment. Therefore, electronic waste should be managed separately from other types of waste to avoid polluting the surrounding environment.
The Jakarta Provincial Environmental Agency has made efforts to address this issue, including implementing an electronic waste collection program, an electronic waste pickup program, and conducting public awareness campaigns.
Quoted from beritajakarta.id, the Acting Head of the South Jakarta Environmental Agency, Sena Saputra, revealed that many residents have utilized the program. “We continue to promote this e-Waste program through various media channels, such as banners and social media,” he said on Tuesday (May 15).
Under the electronic waste collection program, the waste is gathered in each district and sent to the Jakarta Environmental Agency warehouse in Pulomas every week. Electronic waste is also collected at independent Adiwiyata schools before being transferred to the respective districts.
Meanwhile, in the electronic waste pickup program, Jakarta residents can request the Environmental Agency personnel to come to their homes and collect the electronic waste. This service is provided free of charge. The requirement is that the electronic waste being collected must have a minimum weight of 5 kilograms. Registration for pickup can be done online through the website https://lingkunganhidup.jakarta.go.id/.
With proper electronic waste management, the risks associated with its negative impacts can be reduced. The pillar of a smart environment can also be achieved, of course, with the participation of the community in managing, sorting, and disposing of waste properly
